Sabrina Shilad in Office2Nipple sparing mastectomies with hidden scars

Nipple sparing mastectomies are procedures that are available for some women. In this type of mastectomy, the woman is able to keep the entire nipple-areola complex and the breast skin envelope. This mastectomy is done in conjunction with a plastic surgeon who rebuilds the breast. This leaves a more natural appearing breast mound. Dr. Shilad takes care to hide the mastectomy scars so that the best cosmetic result can occur.

Oncoplastic reduction lumpectomies

Oncoplastic reduction lumpectomies are lumpectomies that are done with breast reduction mapping techniques so the best cosmetic result can be obtained. This is appropriate with tumors that occur in specific locations in the breast.  The goal is for the remaining breast mound to appear very similar to before the lumpectomy, with minimal changes in size.

Axillary reverse mapping

Axillary reverse mapping is a procedure Dr. Shilad does to help preserve lymph node channels in women who need an axillary lymph node dissection. In this procedure, dye is injected into the arm while the patient is in surgery. The dye flows into the lymphatic channels so that the channels can be identified and spared from being cut, or can be reattached if necessary. This has been proven to reduce the rates of lymphedema.

Treatment of lactiferous duct fistulas

Surgical removal of lactiferous duct fistulas is an option for some women who have chronic or multiple breast abscesses. This is done to resolve the underlying problem after repeated incision and drainage procedures or multiple abscesses.

Tissue rearrangement

Tissue rearrangement is done with lumpectomies to fill in the tissue defect that is left when a lumpectomy is completed.  Dr. Shilad does this after a lumpectomy to help the breast to maintain as much of its original contours as possible and minimizes the chance of a misshapen breast.
